Cup 1493. Collection: The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths'
Silver, parcel gilt traces.
Measurements: Height: 13.7 cm.
Maker’s mark: an escallop below a batón
The earliest hallmarked item in the Goldsmiths' Company collection and one of the earliest pieces of fully marked secular plate (i.e with a date letter). It was found in the roof of St Andrew’s Church, Middleton, Yorkshire, and subsequently purchased by the Company in 1976.
Secular silver of this period rarely survives, making it an exceptional piece.
